Description
Udzungwa Forest Tented Camp Udzungwa Forest Camp is situated right on the border of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, close to the National Park Headquarters and main gate at Mangula. The lodge is right on the border of the pristine rainforest and offers excellent views of the forest canopy, in which there are several species of monkey, including the endemic Udzungwa Red Colobus, the remarkable Sanje Crested Mangebey, and the Black and White Colobus. A number of different hornbill species fly in over the forest edge and settle in trees along the borders of the rainforest in large numbers every evening at sunset, and the valley echoes with their distinctive calls.

Hondo Hondo (the local name for the lodge) is proud of its eco-friendly ethos. Powered entirely by a hydro generator, and all water heated by solar power, the energy for the camp is completely from sustainable sources. Local community development projects include work with the local primary and secondary schools, support for orphaned children in the village, and nearby womens groups.

Accommodation

Forest En-suite Tents

Hondo Hondo Camp has six Forest en-suite tents for guests requiring a step up from bandas and camping. Each is furnished with items made from renewable sources such as coconut wood and bamboo. The beds are single or double spring mattresses, feather pillows and soft throws made by local women weavers. The open-air bathrooms and secluded verandas offer views up into the nearby forest canopy, along with western style flush toilets and rain showers. Hot water is provided by Solar, and as a back up (in case of heavy rains and little sun) we use elevated bucket showers.

Traditional Thatched Huts

For those who prefer walls and a roof to camping, but want to keep their costs to a minimum, Udzungwa Forest Camp offers five traditional Thatched Huts. Comfortably furnished, well-kept, and spacious, these double rooms offer a unique and exciting alternative to camping under canvas or staying in an everyday hotel room.

The traditional thatched huts lie on a rise overlooking the campsite and with a view out across the Kilombero Valley. The thatched huts are shaded by a teak plantation which is popular with Trumpeter Hornbills and the elegant Black and White Colobus Monkey.
