Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre
Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre
Description
In the village of D'Kar in the Ghanzi district, the Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre is a place where local villagers and other Basarwa from neighbouring settlements come together to share and strengthen their traditions and culture. In the small museum there is a beautiful permanent exhibition on Basarwa culture, which both locals and visitors greatly enjoy.
At the Cultural Centre the focus for the past few months fell mostly on traditional Basarwa music and dance. The interest in dance and dance games became more specific when the Cultural Centre organised the first Traditional Dance Festival in D'Kar in 1997. Since then the Dance Festival has become an annual event.
It has grown from strength to strength. The participants are mostly Basarwa groups from the settlements in the Ghanzi district and Ngamiland. The primary aim of the Dance Festival is to encourage the different cultural groups to value their traditions and also to regain faith in their own cultural heritage. Through the dance festivals the museum hopes to promote contact and appreciation between the different Basarwa cultural groups.
The Kuru Museum and Cultural Centre also tries to encourage the sharing of knowledge between the younger and older people in the community. Apart from the Annual Dance Festival the centre organises traditional knowledge workshops for the local primary school children.
Parents and other elders are usually asked to participate in these workshops. They love to teach the children how to play various traditional musical instruments. These lessons are meant to keep the fire of culture burning, now and for the future.
