As ecotourism is growing throughout the world, more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of responsible travel. Travellers are increasingly demanding that businesses not only claim to be ‘eco’, but that they are also certified by, or members of green bodies.
Whether a business is certified fair trade in tourism, carbon neutral, or if it is a member of an eco tourism organization, certifications and/or memberships can be an advantage for your business, as that might impact a traveller’s decision.
Certifications and memberships may vary by country, but not surprisingly, there are a vast number of local and international organizations and entities that can provide or guide you with such information.
Unfortunately, some small businesses cannot afford such memberships or certifications, but there is no need to panic. By emphasizing to travellers through your advertising channels (such as Viva Eco Africa, or your own website) what your establishments’ eco features are, such as renewable energy used, community and conservation projects, organic food, etc, you will have a better exposure and a higher advantage than those who might have eco features but don’t advertise it.
